Love, or friendship: that is the question.

Tru, a 16-year-old high school student, is uprooted from San Francisco by her lesbian moms and moved away to a new, decidedly more conservative neighborhood in suburban Southern California. Her non-traditional family makes her an outsider – until high school football hero Lodell takes a liking to her.

Lodell turns out to be gay and closeted, but he finds the courage to confide in Tru, though he is still afraid to come out to his family and closest pals. Tru reluctantly agrees to cover for Lodell as his girlfriend.

But, when Tru sees and hears the closed-minded comments about homosexuality from her new "friends", she starts a Gay-Straight Alliance club with openly gay student Walter at her new school. Through the GSA, she meets Trevor, a charming young man – raised by his gay uncle Daniel.

Torn between her commitment to Lodell, and her attraction to and connection with Trevor, Tru must look into her heart, take what she has learned from her close-knit family about love, friendship, honesty and trust, and sort it out... all without hurting someone – possibly herself – in the process.
