1988.
It is a sultry summer night in Beijing. In a bar, young playboy businessman
Handong meets Lan Yu, a student who has just arrived in the capital.
Their encounter was to have been strictly business, but when they
meet again, a tortured Lan Yu begins seeking love. Set in modern-day
China, still turbulent in the wake of Tiananmen Square Square, Lan
Yu is a detailed portrayal of being torn over love, and stars Liu
Ye, who played the son in "Postmen in the Mountains",
and Hu Jun, who was the policeman in "East Palace, West Palace".
"Lan Yu" is directed by Stanley Kwan, who won renewed
praise with "Hold You Tight".
This much-talked-about film was also shown at Cannes. A moving story
of two men in search of love, while being at the mercy of the times
they live in. |
