Boys
will be boys, spring, summer, fall and winter. This program features
the work of
four promising European directors who present
us with seasonal tableaux exploring
the tortures delights of being young and
in love.
Particularly Now, in Spring, in a
style reminiscent of German director Leni Reifenstahl,
follows a Belgian lad as he daydreams of being "discovered"
by a filmmaker while working out
with his friends on a sweaty spring afternoon. Summer vacation
is the theme of the sexy and
sweet French Summer Dress, which relives a holiday
where one boy, annoyed with his lover's
continuous lip-synching, ventures out alone and winds up in a
fleeting affair with a girl sparked
by a request for a light. The contrast between light and shadow
marks the exquisitely filmed
To Play Or To Die, an anguished tale of teenage passions and cruelty.
In this Dutch film,
a youth relentlessly bullied at school painfully
confronts his main tormentor
and the object of his desire, while A
Kiss in the Snow traces with subtlety
and understatement the way friendships grow and
change,
and the true meaning of making angels in the snow.
This
program was curated with the assistance of Eric Schilp,
of the London-based distributor Dangerous
to Know.
