British Gay TV

It has been 30 years since sexual activity between men became legal in England and Wales. Today
there are four "out" members of the Labour Party, two of them Cabinet Ministers. The media
reaction to gay and lesbian issues too has gone through many stages. In 1981,
LWT (a localtelevision station) broadcast a series called *Gaylife*,
and in 1989 Channel 4 produced the world's
first nationally televised gay and lesbian program,
*Out on Tuesday*, made by gays and lesbians.

Shown in a prime time slot from 9 to 10 pm on Tuesday nights, the program, which has also drawn
wide support from straight audiences, celebrates its 10th year in 1998. With special attention to
the role of Channel 4 in producing gay and lesbian TV, the festival's *British Gay TV* program
brings you a sample of the best British broadcasts. We are also very excited to welcome Channel 4
commissioning editor Jacquie Lawrence as a guest speaker. (All screenings will be on VHS.)

Program A :

Butch Femme (1995/Channel 4, Dyke TV/40')

Linger (1995/Channel 4, Dyke TV 2/13')

Bragging about one's masculinity or femininity has become a thing of the past. Today's style is
one where everyone is supposed to be more or less androgynous. A wickedly humorous
production,
*Butch Femme* reminds us how forceful concepts of butch and femme remain in the
lesbian world.
This work was the initial broadcast of Channel 4's Dyke TV, when it began in 1995.
It will be shown with a Dyke TV 2 piece, *Linger*, where a happily married woman remembers
an exciting lesbian relationship.

Program B :

A Star Is Porn (1997/51')

A Night With Derek (1995/Channel 4/25')

Eight years after it began, Channel 4's gay programming was in dire need of a jump start.
Renamed *Queer Street*, the division made a fresh start in 1997, producing *A Star Is Porn*,
a
documentary that follows the processes involved in the making of the first hard-core British
porn video *Butt Buddies*. This lightly erotic program takes us through auditions, training,
filming, and premiere screenings, and provides a strangely educational look at a relatively
unexplored genre. Also screening is *A Night With Derek*, a requiem for the late,
celebrated
artist and the perseverance of his vision.

Program C :

The Wrong Body Part II: Updates (1997/53')

Hermaphrodite Bikini (1995/5')

Last fall the world's first transgender film festival was held in London. Here we show two entries
that were also broadcast on TV. *Hermaphrodite Bikini* is a unique short that portrays
hermaphrodites' fantasies. *The Wrong Body Part 2: Updates* explores the lives of three women
of different generations who believe they have been born in the wrong bodies. The film follows
them for a year and a half, ending with their sex change operations in the Netherlands. In this
truly moving piece, the 15 year-old Fredd's pain catches the spectator in its slow, poignant grasp.

Program D :

Age of Dissent (1994/51')

Somewhere Over the Rainbow (1994/8')

In 1993, the UK parliament was rocked by debates over the Age of Consent law, with calls to drop
the legal age for consensual homosexual sex from 21 to match the legal age for heterosexuals of16
years.
*Age Of Dissent* tells the story of 24 year- old Will and his boyfriend's involvement in this
debate,
and includes many famous faces, such as Tony Blair (before he became Prime Minister)
and actors Sir Ian McKellen and Stephen Fry. We are also screening *Somewhere Over The
Rainbow*,
a look at the 1994 New York Gay Parade and Gay Games that were attended by over one
million people.

--------------------------------------

We are still negotiating to bring you even more programs, such as the high camp game show
*Sticky Moments*, the variety show *Euro Trash* with regular Jean-Paul Gaultier, the BBC's
*Gay Time TV*, the big soap opera hit, *This Life* and many others. Be prepared for some big
surprises!
