Not Love, Just Frenzy

Director: Alfonso Albacete, Miguel Bardem,
David Menkes

1996 Spain 103' 35mm color in Span
with Japanese & English subtitles

The bus terminal in Madrid. Max, the missing lover of Yeye, suddenly returns.
Flickering
flashbacks of a bloody incident. Yeye's best friend Alberto finds out
that his new boyfriend has a
wife and a kid. The malicious looking Pablo stalks Max.
Monica shows more than her thighs to
seduce Max.
Yeye and Monica's roommate, the lonely Maria, mistakenly approaches Pablo.
Somebody murmurs, "Sex is frenzy, not love." Romance, lies, ecstasy, violence,
jealousy, traps, sex,frenzy... or is it love?

With support from the Spanish Embassy and Iberia Airlines of Spain, the third of our Spanish
cinema series introduces the long-awaited Not Love, Just Frenzy, characterized by its complex,
but superbly woven plot, assaults of vivid color and suspense. It is an Almodovaresque labyrinth
of passion, only more accelerated. The main story is not about gay love, but the early shower
scene is not to be missed by any means. The trio of drag queens is hilariously fabulous while our
hero(ine) Bibi Anderson is as breathtakingly gorgeous as ever. From the dark corners of the
Spanish- techno shaken Madrid club FrenesŐ, the kaleidoscope of love and frenzy only explodes
when you exit the club into the first light of dawn.
But you can begin the evening with the French short *Gold Fish* as a light starter.

Interview with the directors Alfonso Albacete, Miguel Bardem and David Menkes

- This film is a collaboration among you three?

A.A. We've formed a group much the same way that musicians form a band.

M.B. I think we've shown it's possible to make "movies-a-trois".

D.M. We've created a monster.

M.B. A three-headed one!

- Is it true that you each came up with one of the three female characters?

D.M. To work out a way for the three of us to make the same film, each creating his own female

characters seemed a good way to start.

A.A. Then we worked into the characters until they belonged to us collectively.

M.B. (After all, it) became a collective film.
