My Friend Is Positive

- For Those Who Have Friends
That Are HIV+-

Director: AIDS Poster Project

1998 Japan 19' video color in Japanese
with English subtitles

If a close friend of yours suddenly announced they were HIV positive, how would you react?
What
kind of comfort and support could you offer?
In this video piece produced by The AIDS Poster Project, APP, images and text are combined to
send a message to the friends of HIV positive people. Life, love and friendship are explored,
as
well as a little eating, cleaning, and conversation. The importance of friends,
the positives of a
smiling face, going through the trials and traumas,
as well as the joys and triumphs of living with
HIV, and most importantly,
being a support for a friend with HIV.

Many of you will remember the presentation of the slide show *Electric Blanket*
(A New York
Visual AIDS production) at the Yokohama International AIDS Conference.
In the same way as that
piece, *My Friend Is Positive* does much more than simply inform us
of the presence of this
disease. It reaches out to an audience with honest feelings
that stem from the true life
experiences of the people involved in this production.

"Cafe+", a casual discussion and "ocha" session with the production team
will be held immediately
after the screening.

AIDS Poster Project

Based in Kyoto, APP has until recently been concerned primarily with Safer Sex postcards and the like,
but on the occasion of the translation of a pamphlet released in the USA specifically for
friends of PWAs
(Persons With AIDS), they came to realize that such support was lacking in
Japan.
Consequently, a slide show based on the pamphlet was produced at the request of the Japan
Nursing Association, Osaka. The work we are screening is the video version of this show.
The APP
continues to work for the good of the entire community,
organizing talks and film shows at
schools, benefit parties and many similar events.
