"Through The Keyhole" Japanese Shorts SAT. 17.7/14:30
 |
This year sees another collection of sparkling shorts from young Japanese
filmmakers. The hero of Reconciliation is endearingly funny on his one man
mission to be reunited with his favorite childhood friend. Where does a
woman running from her controlling husband end up? In Bonten, she is "saved"
by physical pleasure that does not involve sex. Next is Fukai, which depicts
the bloody showdown between two men and a woman with original,
tension-packed imagery. In the latter half of the program we have Queer Boys
and Girls on the Bullet Train, an omnibus of ten 5-minute shorts gathered
under the theme "five minute films about gay women/men." In this collection,
creators from varied backgrounds have come together to assemble a unique
world of film. While different genres and styles are featured in Queer Boys
and Girls, they all share a "compelling something" that captures the times
we live in.

This omnibus work of ten short films was planned and produced by Imaizumi
Koichi and Iwasa Hiroki's "habakari-cinema", responsible for producing
'NAUGHTY BOYS' in 2002. 'Queer Boys and Girls ' is a montage of works
collected under the condition that each be a "five minute film about
lesbians or gay men." The ten directors represented have all used different
methods of expression in their work so far, making this selection of shorts
full of variety. Many of the shorts are from first-time directors, and none
have been screened before. Snapshots of the mood of the times captured by
ten different antennas are reassembled in this work. (Directors are listed
in no particular order.)
