- About the Tokyo
International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival The Tokyo International
Lesbian and Gay Film Festival brings together a variety of works of film covering
themes related to sexual minorities such as gays and lesbians. From shorts to
full-length films, documentaries to dramas, the works shown in the festival cross
all genres, themes, and national boundaries. All works are selected based on their
high quality, artistic sense, and ability to entertain.
Currently, gay
and lesbian films are produced and shown in many countries the world over. In
recent years, many of these works have enjoyed theatrical release and attracted
attention in Japan as well. Unfortunately, however, these represent only a small
handful of all of the films being produced. The organizers of this festival feel
that there is great meaning in showing the diversity of the lesbian and gay community,
their lifestyles, friends, families, and connections with society at large through
works of film as well as through discussion-oriented events. For more than ten
years, we have worked to help a greater number of people appreciate the richness
of gay and lesbian culture.
Our goal is to have as many people as possible,
both in and outside the gay and lesbian community, to see the works shown at the
festival, and in so doing, to gain a sense of their high quality and of the diversity
that they portray. It is our belief that this will contribute to the elimination
of discrimination and prejudice, while also acting as a reminder of the richness
of cinematic culture.
